Kim Kardashian, through a representative, attended the Sotheby’s London Royal and Noble auction last night and emerged as the highest bidder for the Garrard cross that Princess Diana wore publicly in 1987. Kardashian paid $197,453 for the jewel, surpassing the estimated price of $147,000.
The Fleurée cross, adorned with approximately 4 to 5 carats of square-cut amethysts and circular-cut diamonds, was one of the few pieces borrowed by Diana from a jeweler during her lifetime. This cross, created in the 1920s and measuring just over 5 inches long and 4 inches wide, is the third prestigious jewelry item that Kim Kardashian has acquired through public auctions.
In 2011, Kardashian acquired three jade Lorraine Schwartz bracelets during Elizabeth Taylor’s estate sale at Christie’s. The set of bracelets was sold together for $64,900, significantly surpassing the estimated value of $8,000.
In a phone interview, Kardashian mentioned her longstanding desire to possess the Lorraine Schwartz jewels. She felt a connection to Elizabeth Taylor because she was the last person to interview her for a story published in Harper’s Bazaar.
In 2017, Kardashian outbid 12 other participants at Christie’s to acquire Jackie Kennedy’s Cartier Tank watch. She paid an impressive $379,500 for the timepiece that the former First Lady had been photographed wearing on numerous occasions. The estimated value of the watch was $120,000.
At the time, many felt that the classic watch did not match Kardashian’s style. Eventually, she sold the watch to the Cartier archives.
I believe that Kardashian will not regret her purchase of the Garrard cross, as it is a statement piece that perfectly complements her larger-than-life personality.
