However, we also want to take a moment to appreciate the trend of comparatively smaller engagement rings worn by stylish A-Listers Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, and Rooney Mara. These rings may not attract as much attention, but they are elegant and personal pieces that reflect the private nature of their owners’ love lives.

In December 2019, Emma Stone and her fiancé Dave McCary, a director for SNL, announced their engagement on Instagram. The blurry image of the engagement ring sparked speculation about whether the center gem was a pearlescent diamond or a pearl. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a pearl—an unconventional choice for an engagement ring. The ring, known as the Winter Pearl Ring, was designed by Kataoka and purchased from Catbird in Brooklyn for $4,780.

Jennifer Lawrence, a close friend of Emma Stone, got engaged to Cooke Maroney, a gallerist, in February. Although their wedding was a private affair, Lawrence’s engagement ring caught the attention of many. Designed by Alison Lou, the ring features a sophisticated emerald-cut diamond set on a platinum band. While it has been described as “massive” in the press, the diamond is actually a tasteful size and nowhere near as extravagant as the rings of Jennifer Lopez or Scarlett Johansson.

Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix got engaged around the end of May, although they never officially confirmed the news. In October, photographers finally captured a clear image of Mara’s ring at the New York Film Festival premiere of Joker. The ring is a stunning piece featuring a hexagon-shaped portrait diamond flanked by slender tapered baguettes, all set in platinum. The choice of a portrait diamond, a flat diamond without facets, is in line with Mara’s minimalist style, which rarely includes visible jewelry.
